On Tuesday, April 27th, a caravan headed to San Juan Copala was attacked by gunmen identified as members of UBISORT, an organization with affiliations with the PRI (Independent Revolutionary Party) political party and the Oaxacan government. At least two are reported dead, Beatriz Carino, director of CACTUS and an indigenous community radio organizer, and Jyri Antero Jaakkola, an observer from Finland.

The caravan was organized to provide basic necessities, such as water and food, and to accompany teachers from the Section 22 teacher’s union who were denied from entering the community for over 5 months. Participants of the caravan included: representatives from the Assembly of Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO), Center for Community Support Working Together (CACTUS), members of Independent Triqui Movement of Unity and Struggle (MULT-I), Oaxacan Voices Constructing Autonomy and Liberty (VOCAL), Mexican reporters, and international observers from Belgium, Finland, Italy, and Germany.

We are gathering before the immigrant rights march on May 1st to mourn the loss of two amazing activists, and to hold the Mexican government accountable for this and hundreds of other attacks against communities and movements in Mexico.

We condemn the military coup d’etat in Honduras on Sunday, June 28, 2009 against the constitutional government of Manuel Zelaya Rosales and against the Honduran people and their deepest aspirations.

This act represents a desperate act on the part of the right-wing and its allies to stop the peoples’ search for democratic paths for a national transformation of Honduras.

The reactionary political forces have tried frantically to stop the consultative National Poll that was to be held on Sunday, June 28th. The question to be voted on by Honduran people was whether they approve the installation of a Fourth Urn (ballot box) during the upcoming general elections in November 2009 for a referendum on whether or not to have a National Constituent Assembly to revise the Honduran constitution.

The coup d’etat was planned and executed by a grouping consisting of a section of the National Congress, the communications media and its owners, the Public Ministry, the most powerful businessmen in the country and the Armed Forces.

We also denounce the military’s return to the role of being an instrument of destabilization and repression, similar to that played in the 1980’s.

We are enormously preoccupied with what may be happening in the campesino and indigenous peoples’ communities in the countryside. As of this moment, we know that electricity and radio and television communication has been cut.

Many representative elected by the people have been threatened and arrest orders are being issued for leaders of organizations that have been fighting for a new Honduras – a Honduras with justice and equity.

We support the popular organizations’ struggle for the National Popular and Democratic Constituent Assembly and recognize President Zelaya as the sole constitutional president of Honduras.

We call on the international community to show a decided opposition to this aggression against the Honduran people and to express solidarity and support so that the human rights of the Honduran people are not violently disregarded and violated.

http://www.amnestyusa.org/events/midwest/forum-on-justice-for-the-women-of-antenco/page.do?id=1092101

Join us and let the Mexican government know we will not stand quiet until the Mexican government takes appropriate action. In May 2006, following a police crackdown on protests by a peasant organization in San Salvador Atenco, Mexico, over 45 women were arrested without explanation, dozens were subjected to physical, psychological and sexual violence by the police, and more than 2
years later, none of the officials responsible for their abuse have been prosecuted. The women still wait for justice. Had this scandal occurred in the USA, the public would be outraged and would demand that those responsible be brought to justice. We will be silent no more!

The Teaching Rebellion Speaking Tour is Coming to Chicago Nov. 5th, 6th and 7th!

“Once you learn to speak, you don’t want to be quiet anymore,” an indigenous community radio activist said. Accompanied by photography and political art, Teaching Rebellion is a compilation of testimonies from longtime organizers, teachers, students, housewives, religious leaders, union members, schoolchildren, indigenous community activists, artists and journalists—and many others who participated in what became the Popular Assembly of the People’s of Oaxaca. This is a chance to listen directly to those invested in and affected by what quickly became one of the most important social uprisings of the 21st century.

The Teaching Rebellion speaking tour aims to foster dialogue among activists from Oaxaca and the U.S. around organizing strategies and movement building utilizing the experience of Oaxacan organizers, who brought together labor, indigenous, women’s, youth, and neighborhood organizations to build a powerful movement for democracy and accountability. Speaker Gustavo Vilchis will join us from Mexico, accompanied by co-facilitator and translator Rachel Wallis to speak about the book, present art and photography from Oaxaca and promote discussion and reflection on the former and current political climate in Oaxaca and its relevance to organizing in their own communities.

Speaker: Gustavo Vilchis, a native of neighboring state of Guerrero arrived in Oaxaca as an independent photographer, seeking to cover the people’s resistance and provide an alternative to the coverage offered by the commercial media. An eyewitness to the 2006 murder of Indymedia Journalist Brad Will by plainclothes Oaxacan police officers, Gustavo is speaking out against recent attempts to charge protesters for Brad’s murder.

Come hear Gustavo’s testimony and see an exhibit of his photographs of the Oaxacan movement
